The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) says the FBI has decided to take over the investigation of the ICE-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good.
On Wednesday morning, Renee Nicole Good died after a confrontation with ICE that took place in Minneapolis. At the time of the incident, a large-scale surge of federal officers were conducting new immigration enforcement efforts in Minnesota.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Good “weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism. An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots.”
President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem have expressed their support for the ICE officer. However, Democrats have strongly rejected the federal government’s explanation of the incident.
According to the Minnesota BCA, law enforcement authorities initially agreed that the FBI and BCA would conduct a joint investigation of the incident. However, the BCA now says the U.S. Attorney’s Office decided that only the FBI will be investigating the incident.

“Without complete access to the evidence, witnesses and information collected, we cannot meet the investigative standards that Minnesota law and the public demands,” the BCA said in a Thursday press release. “As a result, the BCA has reluctantly withdrawn from the investigation.”
Following that announcement, Gov. Tim Walz held a press conference and said “Minnesota must be part of this investigation.” The governor also said “it feels very, very difficult that we will get a fair outcome” because Trump and other federal officials “have already passed judgement.”
Walz, who described the federal government’s characterization of the incident as “false,” said he would continue to push for Minnesota to be a part of the investigation. Walz also repeated his call for federal agents to leave Minnesota.
At a Thursday press conference of her own, Noem discussed the investigation and said Minnesota has “not been cut out. They don’t have any jurisdiction in this investigation.”
Immediately after the shooting occurred on Wednesday, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said her agency was “pushing hard for a local investigation which is the only way to ensure full transparency and review by our office.”
However, Moriarty is widely viewed as a left-wing prosecutor who is antagonistic toward law enforcement. In 2024, law enforcement groups roundly criticized her for bringing multiple felony charges against Minnesota State Trooper Ryan Londregan. In that case, Moriarty eventually dropped all charges against Londregan after her case fell apart.
