House Republican Says Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick Should Testify Regarding Alleged Epstein Ties

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick should testify to the House Oversight Committee to answer questions about his alleged connections to Jeffrey Epstein.

“Howard Lutnick should take questions from the Oversight committee, Mace said, responding to a published photo of Epstein standing in front of “what appears to be Howard Lutnick.”

It is unclear if the man in the photo is Lutnick.

According to CNBC, the Justice Department had removed the photo “from its database of Epstein-related documents.”

CNBC shared further:

It is not known when the photo, which since has been restored to the DOJ’s public database, was taken.

But it appears to include, in addition to Epstein, Lutnick and his friend Michael Lehrman, who other documents in the DOJ’s database indicated was vacationing with Lutnick and his family when they all visited Epstein for lunch on his private island in December 2012.

Lutnick has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.

Mace later Friday morning told reporters, “I will be asking” Lutnick to testify to the Oversight committee.

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., separately told reporters that he believed there would be enough votes on the committee to subpoena Lutnick to testify.

“I did not have anything you could call a relationship, anything you could call an acquaintance. I literally met him three times over 14 years with widespread in between. That’s all I can remember. That’s all there is in the documents,” Lutnick previously said.

“According to legal documents and emails, Epstein and Lutnick did business together and Lutnick vacationed on Epstein’s island, LONG AFTER Lutnick claims they parted ways and after LONG AFTER Epstein was a known sex offender,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) said earlier this month.

Massie previously said Lutnick should resign over his alleged ties to Epstein.

“What questions do you have about Lutnick’s ties to Epstein, and should he come before Congress and testify?” Manu Raju asked Massie on CNN’s “Inside Politics.”

“No, he should just resign. I mean, there are three people in Great Britain that have resigned in politics. The ambassador from Great Britain to the United States, the prince lost his title for less than what we’ve seen Howard Lutnick lie about,” Massie said.

“Look, Howard Lutnick clearly went to the island if we believe what’s in these files. He was in business with Jeffrey Epstein. And this was many years after Jeffrey Epstein was convicted. You know, lightly sentenced, but was convicted for sexual crimes. So, he’s got a lot to answer for, but really, he should make life easier on the president, frankly, and just resign,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee reportedly have the necessary votes to force Lutnick to testify.

It is the latest development in the Oversight Committee Democrats’ campaign to control the trajectory of the panel’s Epstein probe, even as they lack subpoena power as the minority party. The subpoena for the Justice Department’s Epstein files ultimately came from several Republicans joining with Democrats to support the measure.

“We’re going to continue to, you know, ask questions of everyone … that shows up in photos on the island and things like that,” House Oversight Chair James Comer told reporters Friday in Chappaqua.

The Kentucky Republican also suggested the public would be curious to hear what Hillary Clinton said about Lutnick.

“I think it’ll be interesting what Hillary Clinton said about Howard Lutnick,” Comer said, before Mace interjected: “And how she said it.”
