President Trump on Wednesday unveiled a massive renovation project for Washington Dulles International Airport, saying the aging federally owned airport is currently “terrible.”
According to NBC News, Trump has been eyeing the project for months and took a detour in his motorcade through the airport last October.
“We’re also going to rebuild Dulles Airport because it’s not a good airport,” he said at a December Cabinet meeting, according to the outlet.
“It should be a great airport. It’s not a good airport at all. It’s a terrible airport,” he added.
Trump discussed the multibillion-dollar plan with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
“It’s an impossible airport. You get off a bus and go into a train and from a train to another bus. It’s the worst airport,” Trump said.
“This transformation is another step in our ongoing efforts to make Washington, D.C. safe and beautiful again,” he added.

In a news release that day, the Transportation Department said: “Washington Dulles International Airport is known for its dated facilities, inefficient system of people movers that deliver passengers as much as a half mile away from their gates, its moon-rover-like ‘mobile lounges,’ jet fuel smell in the concourses, and a paltry number of gates at the main terminal.”
Named for the late Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, the airport was formally dedicated by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. It is one of three Washington-area airports.
The administration has previously expressed interest in renaming the airport.
Multiple sources told NBC News in February that the Trump administration had asked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for Dulles International Airport and New York’s Penn Station to be named after Trump in exchange for releasing federal funds required to build a long-delayed tunnel between New York and New Jersey.
The money was eventually released without such an agreement in place.

A new underground U-shaped aerotrain will bring travelers to their terminals, along with moving sidewalks. The existing aerotrain only serves the A, B and C concourses, and not the D concourse where the United Airlines gates are located. More moving sidewalks are also going to be added.
The plans include a major terminal expansion: Four new linear concourses where the current A, B, C and D gates are. The C and D gates, constructed in 1985, were meant to be temporary terminals for United Airlines but have remained in place for over 40 years.
The new design will move the parking lot closer to the main terminal for travel convenience.
In recent months, Mr. Trump hosted charrettes, calling in executives from development and finance companies to the Oval Office to make pitches, and he hounded his advisers by phone with suggestions, according to sources familiar with the conversations.
Roughly 30 proposals were submitted for the project, including HNTB, STV Group, Jacobs, Ferrovial, and AECOM, one of the firms that is working on the president’s White House ballroom project.
Ferrovial, which most recently developed the new Terminal 1 at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, proposed a new main terminal that featured a wavy roof design. Mr. Trump rejected that.
Jacobs’ proposal included a bridge that passengers would cross to go between terminals and that would be built high enough that planes could pass underneath, but the president disliked the design of the bridge.
An HNTB design was the most dramatic – essentially a new airport built from scratch with an additional main terminal at the other end of the property. Mr. Trump thought it would be cumbersome to rebuild while keeping plane traffic moving.
