WATCH: Passengers Scream as Boeing 737 Ceiling Panels Come Loose

Passengers screamed and reached overhead as loose ceiling panels sagged into the cabin of a Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 during a frightening flight emergency in Iran.

The jet had departed Mashhad for Kermanshah before the crew turned back following a reported technical problem. Footage circulating from the incident shows passengers gripping seatbacks while sections of the cabin lining hang above them.

It is an awful scene to watch. People are trying to keep pieces of the ceiling from coming down on their heads.

UOL, citing information released by the government of Razavi Khorasan province, reported that the aircraft developed a landing-gear tire problem after departure on September 15. The flight returned to Mashhad rather than continuing to its destination.

The outlet described footage distributed by Iranian news agency Akharin Khabar that showed the cabin lining falling during the landing. Passengers can be heard shouting as the coverings come away and the space behind them is exposed.

Despite those alarming images, no injuries were reported. UOL cited Hassan Jafari, through Iran’s Fars news agency, saying the passengers disembarked safely and were transferred to another flight to Kermanshah.

The incident also interrupted airport operations. A runway was temporarily closed before reopening later in the day, according to the report.

The exact failure still matters. A dramatic recording can show what passengers endured without settling what went wrong with the aircraft.

Aero Telegraf reported a more specific account of the tire problem: part of the tread separated during takeoff. Citing Iranian reporting, the aviation outlet said an airport representative disputed descriptions of a tire explosion, while the crew also reported an engine problem after departure.

Its account placed the falling ceiling panels during the aircraft’s return landing. Several pieces came down onto passengers and seats, while other sections remained suspended over the cabin.

The report said the crew returned to Mashhad’s Shahid Hasheminejad International Airport after reporting the problem. The aircraft landed safely, and the passengers were able to leave it.

Those details leave a distinction between a reported tire failure, a reported engine problem and a proven sequence connecting them. The visible cabin damage alone does not establish that sequence or demonstrate what caused the shaking.

Accounts differ on exactly when the worst shaking occurred. The cabin video does not provide an outside view that settles whether that portion was filmed in the air or on the runway.

What it does show is disturbing enough: loose panels hanging over occupied seats and passengers reaching up beneath them.

Everyone getting off safely is the welcome outcome. The unanswered question is how a flight emergency left passengers trying to hold the cabin ceiling in place.
