
The father of NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin passed away, and his mother was critically injured, from a horrific fire that consumed the couple’s North Carolina home.
At Least One Fatality After Fire Erupts At Home Of NASCAR Star’s Parents
“A man has died and a woman is critically injured following a Sunday night house fire on Blacksnake Road near Stanley,” a statement from the Gaston County Emergency Management and Fire Services read.
“Firefighters were dispatched at 6:19 p.m. and arrived at 1137 Blacksnake Road at 6:27 p.m. to find a two-story home mostly engulfed, with flames showing through the entire attic. Outside the home were the residents, Dennis Hamlin, 75, and Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, who both suffered catastrophic injuries while escaping the flames. Gaston County Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) transported Dennis and Mary Lou to CaroMont Regional Medical Center,” the statement continued.
“Dennis later died from his injuries at the hospital. Mary Lou was transferred to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem, where she is actively being treated. Due to the extent of fire and resulting structural collapse, the cause is currently undetermined. However, the investigation is ongoing,” it added.

Nearly a dozen different departments responded to the fire as Stanley does not have fire hydrants, according to local outlet WSOC-TV.
Chief David Toomey of the Lucia Riverbend Fire Department Toomey told WCNC-TV that 40-45 percent of the home was already burning by the time fire crews arrived.
Denny Hamlin co-owns the 23XI Racing NASCAR team with NBA legend Michael Jordan.
His son Denny, is one of NASCAR’s most accomplished drivers. He is in a tie for 10th on the NASCAR Cup Series’ all-time win list with 60 and has won three Daytona 500s.

The three-time Daytona 500 winner Hamlin had long credited his father with getting behind his childhood dream of racing at the highest levels.
“NASCAR extends its deepest condolences to Denny Hamlin and the entire Hamlin family,” NASCAR said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Dennis Hamlin instilled a love of racing in his son, and sacrificed greatly to develop Denny into a world-class talent in the sport. We also continue to offer our thoughts and prayers to Denny’s mother, Mary Lou, and hope for her full recovery.”
Denny Hamlin, 45, has won 60 NASCAR Cup Series races and is considered one of sports greatest drivers.
The elder Hamlin had been battling illness in recent and months and could not travel to see his son race.
