BECAUSE you know the Mysteries could not be declared without one or two showing face, I propose to you Eeyore as the Gnostic in all of this. Oh sure, ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’ is simply adorable, as party games and explanations go. Milne sets the trap knowing that the vulgar and uninitiated will gladly take the bait. It’s misdirection. Eeyore is introduced to us in the fourth chapter, and read the title for yourself, why don’t you? ‘In Which Eeyore Loses a Tail and Pooh Finds One.’ Exactly, it’s all there in the heading. The Gnostic is someone who has lost and relocated himself again by way of an internal experience which can only be felt rather than expressed, though he often cannot do it alone. He needs a Master to show him the Way, which is where Pooh steps in.
