The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) warned that Hollywood Burbank Airport is prone to being the next airport to experience a mid-air collision.
“Burbank is one where commercial airlines have called me to say the next midair is going to be at Burbank, and nobody at [the Federal Aviation Administration] is paying attention to us,” NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
According to the outlet, Homendy explained that Hollywood Burbank Airport is a ‘hotspot’ with a high volume of mixed helicopter and airplane traffic.
It’s also a “medium-sized” airport, featuring short runways and a tight airspace, the Los Angeles Times noted.
The chair of the NTSB expressed concerns over the dangerous possibility of a mid-air collision at Hollywood Burbank Airport.

More from the Los Angeles Times:
She added that “whether it is involving helicopters or not, people are raising red flags, and why aren’t people listening? The FAA has to ensure safety. That is their job.”
Homendy spoke just before the first anniversary of a catastrophic crash that claimed 67 lives outside Washington, D.C. The agency revealed findings into the crash of an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter. As Homendy laid out what she called a series of institutional failures by the FAA before the January 2025 crash, she pointed to concerns about the mixing of commercial airplane and helicopter traffic, noting that there are extensive data pointing to the danger of such a midair collision.
“The Federal Aviation Administration ignored warnings about a dangerous level of air traffic at Reagan National Airport before the midair collision between a commercial jet and U.S. Army helicopter that took 67 lives, federal investigators said,” The Washington Post stated.

The issue, according to experts, is the proximity to Van Nuys Airport just 15 miles away, where there are up to 700 mostly non-commercial flights every day.
After the stern warning from Homendy, officials at the Federal Aviation Administration fired back, saying that after safety analyses, they already lowered the Van Nuys traffic pattern by 220 feet and that has resulted in a “reduction of traffic collision avoidance system alerts.”
While most airline passengers who spoke with KTLA said they feel safe flying out of Burbank, Katherin Muellerchen said she could possibly see an issue.
“I do know we have a lot of helicopters flying over the valley, so that is a potential concern,” she said.
Despite the pushback, Homendy insisted that the FAA needs to do more to keep passengers and crew members safe.
