DEVELOPING: Rooftop Gunman Opens Fire in Gun-Controlled Los Angeles — Three Reportedly Wounded Before Suspect Is Taken Into Custody

A gunman reportedly opened fire from the rooftop of an apartment complex in South Los Angeles on Monday morning, leaving three people injured and triggering a massive police response.

The suspect was taken into custody after officers flooded the Vermont-Slauson area near Denver Avenue, according to early reports from the scene.

Police had not publicly identified the suspect, disclosed a possible motive, or released the conditions of the three people taken to the hospital as of this report.

One live update placed the shooter on a rooftop and reported that the suspect was already in custody as officers worked the scene.

FOX 11 Los Angeles reports that LAPD officers were called to the 7000 block of Denver Avenue at roughly 10:50 a.m. Monday after a shooting was reported near South Figueroa Street and West Florence Avenue.

SkyFOX footage showed a heavy law-enforcement presence and a large perimeter surrounding the area. Roads were blocked while officers secured the scene and investigators began sorting out exactly what happened.

The response was centered in the Vermont-Slauson neighborhood, south of downtown Los Angeles. The local station cautioned that authorities had released few confirmed details in the first stage of the investigation.

At that point, police had not announced the suspect’s identity, a motive, or the circumstances that led to the gunfire. The station said it would continue updating the story as additional information became available.

Another on-scene update reported that three patients were transported by ambulance, while their conditions remained unknown.

The violence erupted in a state whose political leaders have spent years treating gun restrictions as the answer to violent crime.

The California Department of Justice maintains an extensive firearms rulebook covering ammunition purchases and transfers, assault-weapon definitions, concealed-carry licensing, firearm precursor parts, dealer requirements, background-check identification rules, and self-manufactured firearms.

The department’s official regulations page links to completed rulemaking on ammunition-vendor licensing, dealer records and fees, gun-show inspections, eligibility-check identification, and several categories of weapon and component registration.

It also points Californians to the current firearms regulations in Division 5 of Title 11 of the California Code of Regulations. That is the legal maze law-abiding residents must navigate before they can lawfully buy, carry, transfer, or sometimes even build a firearm.

None of those restrictions can physically stop a criminal from climbing onto a roof and pulling a trigger. A person determined to commit violence simply ignores them.

Emergency crews were still moving victims from the apartment complex as police held the perimeter and investigators searched for answers.

The fact that a suspect was reportedly captured is welcome news, but Los Angeles residents will now wait to learn who was behind the attack, what weapon was used, and why three more people were sent to the hospital in one of America’s most heavily regulated gun-control states.
