Appointee Of Republican Governor Shot And K*lled In Border Town

Eddy Betancourt, a prominent businessman and appointee of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, was shot and killed in McAllen, Texas.

A suspect remains at large.

FOX 26 Houston shared further details:

A warrant for murder, a first-degree felony, was issued Sunday afternoon for Reynaldo Mata-Rios. While Mata-Rios reportedly told officials that he intended to surrender to the McAllen Police Department, he remained at large as of Tuesday morning.

The investigation began following the fatal shooting of Betancourt on December 27, 2025.

According to police, a 911 call was made just before 4 p.m. The caller told dispatch that the “[victim] is on the floor [possibly] shot,” and “[not] breathing.”

It happened inside a business in central McAllen, on North Ware Road. The caller found Betancourt. The identity of the person who found him has not been released.

The McAllen Police Department is currently working alongside local, state, and federal agencies to find the suspect.

Betancourt, 61, has held multiple public service positions at the local and state levels.

Abbott first appointed Betancourt to the Texas Facilities Commission.

Betancourt was appointed to the Texas Facilities Commission by Gov. Abbott in 2020 and was reappointed in 2023—a term set to expire i January 2029, according to the Office of the Texas Governor. The 61-year-old was the president of R&B General Construction Co Inc., co-owner and president of National Tire and Wheel LLC, and a general retail partner and manager of E2H Investments.

In addition, Betancourt—an alum of University of Texas-Pan American—was a member of the Hidalgo County Appraisal District Board of Directors, the ENACTUS Advisory Board, the McAllen Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.
