Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) said he would “lean toward” voting to impeach President Trump if he ordered the seizure of Greenland from Denmark.
Bacon made the remarks in an interview with the Omaha-World Herald.
The Nebraska Republican called Trump’s statements about needing Greenland as “utter buffoonery,” Newsweek noted.
“I’ll be candid with you. There’s so many Republicans mad about this,” Bacon told the outlet, according to Mediaite.
“If he went through with the threats, I think it would be the end of his presidency,” he added.

Bacon — who often breaks from MAGA as a representative from a swing district — has become even more outspoken against Trump since announcing he is leaving Congress at the end of the current term. Another prominent Republican who falls in that category — Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) — took to the Senate floor on Wednesday to express his anger about a potential Greenland takeover.
“It’s about whether the United States intends to face a constellation of strategic adversaries with capable friends — or commit an unprecedented act of strategic self-harm and go it alone,” McConnell said. He added that, “following through on this provocation would be more disastrous for the President’s legacy than withdrawing from Afghanistan was for his predecessor.”
And the American public is just about united against a Greenland incursion as well. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll out Wednesday showed just 4 percent of Americans back a military takeover of Greenland.
“The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” Trump said.
“Militarily, without the vast power of the United States, much of which I built during my first term, and am now bringing to a new and even higher level, NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent – Not even close! They know that, and so do I. NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Anything less than that is unacceptable,” he added.

Newsweek noted:
“It would be a total mistake to invade an ally. It would be catastrophic to our allies and everything. It’s just the worst idea ever in my view,” he added.
The Nebraska Republican has previously resisted supporting impeachment efforts against Trump—voting against both articles during the president’s first term. However, Bacon acknowledged to the World-Herald that if Trump pushed forward with military action against Greenland, “I would lean that way” regarding possible impeachment.
Bacon recently became the lone Republican cosponsor on a House bill designed to limit the president’s capacity to invade a NATO ally, signaling his concern within Congress about the president’s remarks and potential actions.
European leaders, as well as officials from Denmark and Greenland, have pushed back strongly against the idea of any U.S. takeover. “Greenland is not for sale now, just as it was not for sale in 2019,” Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said Monday. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede added, “We are not Danish, we are Greenlandic. We have full authority over our own land, and we will not be sold or bought like a commodity.”
